PauseAI Sweden

PauseAI Sweden is the Swedish national chapter of PauseAI, the international AI-safety movement calling for a coordinated, treaty-backed pause on the training of the most powerful general-purpose AI systems. The chapter operates a dedicated Swedish-language website at pauseai.se and is listed on PauseAI Global's communities directory as the Swedish national chapter. PauseAI Sweden was formally announced as a national chapter in PauseAI's May 2025 newsletter, though activists in Stockholm had already participated in PauseAI's international protest cycles before that formal launch. This entry closes the Sweden advocacy-chapter gap flagged in the PauseAI Italia drafting notes and extends the European PauseAI cluster into Scandinavia.

Structure and leadership

Jonathan Salter heads PauseAI Sweden, as named in PauseAI's May 2025 newsletter and confirmed by his SvD Näringsliv media profile. Salter is a political science student and long-standing organizer in the Swedish AI-safety and effective-altruism community: he co-founded AI Safety Collab and has directed Effective Altruism Stockholm since 2019. The chapter follows PauseAI's federated national-chapter model, operating under the org-pauseai parent structure with a country-specific website and localized Swedish-language outreach. Protest history

Stockholm appeared among the fourteen protest cities in the 13 May 2024 International Day of Action ahead of the Seoul AI Safety Summit on 21–22 May 2024, placing Sweden in PauseAI's second large-scale international mobilisation and its first multi-continent action. Stockholm was among the European anchor cities alongside London, Berlin, Den Haag, and Paris; no Sweden-specific organizer name or turnout figure has been located in indexed sources.

On 9 February 2025 — within the Paris AI Action Summit protest wave spanning 7–11 February 2025 — PauseAI Sweden staged a protest at Mynttorget in Stockholm's Gamla Stan (old town). Stockholm is listed in PauseAI Global's February 2025 protest page among the roughly twenty cities coordinated around the Paris AI Action Summit. PauseAI's May 2025 newsletter credited Salter with organizing the Stockholm action within this wave.

Place in the movement

PauseAI Sweden is the corpus's first Nordic AI-safety advocacy-chapter entry of the PauseAI type, complementing Et Grønt Holbæk — which covers Danish data-center opposition — with an AI-pause-moratorium footprint in the Scandinavian cluster. The European PauseAI chapter set in the corpus now spans the UK (PauseAI London), France (Pause IA), Germany (PauseAI Germany), the Netherlands (PauseAI Utrecht), Czechia (PauseAI Czechia), Poland (PauseAI Polska), Italy (PauseAI Italia), and now Sweden — an eight-chapter bloc spanning Northern, Western, Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe.

PauseAI Sweden's documented state at draft time is post-launch operational: website live, global-directory listing present, named chapter lead publicly identified and profiled in Swedish media, and protest presence in both the May 2024 and February 2025 international PauseAI waves. The two-wave protest record — one predating the chapter's formal launch announcement and one tied to it — distinguishes PauseAI Sweden from the formation-phase chapters like PauseAI Polska and marks it at a comparable operational stage to PauseAI Italia at its draft time.
